Post-it note from Professor Leigh Sparks, Head of Retail Studies at Stirling University, speaking at the Can Do Places first Enterprise Mash Up (August 2014):
- Don’t blame the retailers for what has happened in our town centres. It’s not their fault that schools, hospitals and offices have been moved out of town.
- For towns centres to flourish, you need to give multiple groups of people a reason to go there.
- We need space in town centres for experiment, and planners and councils – and landlords – need to be more flexible to allow that.
